The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, sound judgment under changing ground conditions, and the ability to read locate/tracking data accurately in the field. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to BlueWorx's zero-tolerance substance abuse policy.

This role is also expected to mentor less experienced operators and locators, helping build bore skills across the crew.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the HDD rig to bore pilot holes, ream, and pull back product (pipe, conduit) along the planned path
  • Read and interpret locate/tracking data to steer the bore, avoid existing utilities, and stay on grade
  • Set up and break down the rig, entry/exit pits, and drilling fluid (mud) system at each bore location
  • Mix and manage drilling fluid to maintain proper hole conditions and control fluid loss/returns
  • Communicate continuously with the locator and ground crew throughout the bore
  • Identify and respond to changes in ground conditions, obstructions, or unexpected utility conflicts
  • Perform daily pre-operation inspections of the rig, drill pipe, and support equipment
  • Troubleshoot minor mechanical issues and coordinate repairs with maintenance as needed
  • Maintain accurate records of bore logs, footage, and materials used
  • Follow all locate/one-call requirements and confirm utility clearances before boring
  • Maintain a safe work area, including proper barricading, traffic control, and spoil/fluid containment
  • Train and mentor less experienced crew members on boring operations as needed
  • Safety & Environment:
    • Comply with and enforce all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and site-specific requirements
    • Monitor and correct PPE use and care among crew members on the jobsite
    • Follow and reinforce all utility locating procedures and excavation safety standards with the crew
    • Identify and report unsafe conditions, incidents, or near misses immediately to leadership
    • Lead daily Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and tailgate safety meetings for the crew
    • Maintain and promote situational awareness of underground and overhead hazards
    • Participate in drug and alcohol testing programs as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership to support operations and project completion

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience operating HDD equipment, or equivalent experience as a locator/operator progressing toward driller
  • Working knowledge of utility locating and tracking systems

  • Ability to read utility maps, plans, and grade sheets
  • Valid driver's license; CDL preferred or willing to obtain
