Professional Summary of Heavy Equipment Mechanic
The
Heavy Equipment Mechanic manages the comprehensive maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of a specialized deep foundation and pier drilling fleet. This role requires a highly skilled technician capable of working in both a central shop and active, fast-paced field environments. The primary objective is to minimize equipment downtime and prevent catastrophic failure, with a strong focus on maintaining advanced hydraulic systems and proactively managing modern diesel aftertreatment and emissions controls.
Responsibilities of Heavy Equipment Mechanic
- Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical system failures on specialized hydraulic drilling rigs, crawler cranes, and support machinery.
- Execute forced DPF regeneration cycles (re-gens) using specialized diagnostic software when automatic or passive field re-gens fail to clear soot.
- Troubleshoot diesel aftertreatment faults involving soot buildup, faulty differential pressure sensors, and NOx sensors to prevent drilling engines from entering "derate" or limp mode.
- Educate field equipment operators on interpreting dashboard re-gen prompts and performing manual, stationary field re-gens safely to avoid critical job site downtime.
- Maintain and overhaul custom drilling components, including high-torque rotary heads, kelly bars, specialized drilling augers, core barrels, bucket augers, and heavy rock chisels.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance, including fluid and filter changes, comprehensive safety inspections, and system load tests.
- Interpret technical schematics, structural blueprints, and manufacturer manuals to ensure all repairs comply with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards.
- Keep highly accurate documentation of all maintenance, diagnostics, forced re-gens, and repairs completed on each piece of machinery.
- Enforce rigid compliance with all OSHA protocols, company safety rules, environmental mandates, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) guidelines.
Qualifications of Heavy Equipment Mechanic
- High School Diploma or GED is required; a technical degree in Diesel Technology or completion of a heavy equipment apprenticeship is highly preferred.
- 3 to 5 years of proven experience as a heavy equipment mechanic working on heavy diesel engines and advanced hydraulic systems.
- Demonstrated proficiency working with modern Tier 4 Final diesel emissions systems and computerized diagnostic diagnostic tools.
- Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record is mandatory.
- Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be possessed or successfully obtained within 90 days of hire.
- Physical stamina to regularly lift up to 100 lbs, crawl, squat, bend, and work in tight or confined spaces for extended periods outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Flexibility to travel routinely to remote project sites and work long, flexible 12-to-14 hour shifts when critical field repairs are needed.
- Must pass a mandatory pre-employment drug screen, background check, and Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam.
Preferred Experience Job Title: Heavy Equipment Mechanic
- Direct experience maintaining specialty foundation drilling rigs from manufacturers such as Bauer, Soilmec, Casagrande, or IMT.
- Advanced OEM certifications for diagnostic software applications (e.g., Cummins Insite, CAT Electronic Technician, or Texa systems).
- Professional credentials such as ASE Medium-Heavy Truck certifications, mobile hydraulics certifications, or mobile crane technician credentials.
